(About)

JOE is the only Korean vocal coach recognized by renowned vocal coaches from the US and UK who have trained global pop stars. He is acclaimed for having the deepest understanding and expertise in Korea regarding modern vocal techniques, particularly in mix voice training. He pioneered vocology-based practical vocal training in Korea and has continuously acquired the latest research, theories, and coaching techniques through frequent visits to the United States, a leader in voice science and vocal education. Based on his accumulated knowledge and skills, he now applies his expertise to both professional singers' vocal training and voice rehabilitation, achieving remarkable results and receiving high satisfaction and support from clients who have experienced his training firsthand. JOE's client base extends beyond Korea to the United States, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. He is trilingual in Korean, English, and Japanese, offering vocal lessons in each language according to client preference.

(Biography)

JOE's musical journey began in childhood, influenced by his mother who was a singer in Busan. Through her, he grew up exposed to various genres including K-pop, Western pop, and J-pop. He particularly enjoyed singing along to songs playing on cassettes and radio, and The Beatles' "Yesterday," taught by his mother, became his first vocal lesson. Despite developing a passion for music and singing in this environment, like many students, he struggled with mastering vocal techniques needed to perform songs as he desired. Self-study and conventional vocal training at the time had their limitations, leading to years of searching for solutions.
A breakthrough came when he discovered the sensation of register transition, something he had previously encountered in a mix voice singing manual he had studied independently in his early twenties. Subsequently, JOE analyzed the vocal techniques of numerous pop stars trained in the mix voice method and discovered a crucial commonality: they all maintained their tone and style while transitioning smoothly between low and high registers.
This revelation led him to spontaneously travel to Japan on a one-way ticket, seeking specific training to address his own vocal weaknesses. There, his first encounter with mix voice technique inspired him to become a vocal coach who would bring this groundbreaking training method to Korea. From that point on, he learned from vocal coaches renowned as masters of mix voice coaching, acquiring not only voice training but also coaching techniques and expertise. He deepened his understanding through lectures, conferences, and coaching programs with American voice scientists, studying numerous research materials on vocalization. This comprehensive study helped him develop his own distinctive coaching ideas and training methods.
JOE's training methodology is now used for professional singers' vocal training and voice management. He has earned high acclaim for helping students who have long struggled with vocalization and rehabilitating singers with voice disorders.

"To become a professional vocal coach, you need many years of focused training and experience with diverse cases."

The vocal coaches at JOE Studio first experienced training as students themselves. Through their own growth journey, they have developed not only the crucial ability to empathize with students but also the high-level listening skills required in actual lessons and a deep understanding of the physical changes that occur in students during training.
These abilities cannot be developed simply by learning coaching methods or specific techniques. Rather, they are skills that can only be cultivated through years of dedicated practice, proper training, focused exercises, and learning from long-term trial and error, combined with deep reflection.
Our coaches have completed their own vocal/singing training along with a minimum of 2 years of vocal coaching training under my supervision, spanning anywhere from 8 to 12 years. With an average of nearly 10 years per individual, these vocal coaches have been personally trained and monitored by me, passing my stringent standards.

  • SUA

Influenced by divas like Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, and Heart, she began her journey by successfully auditioning for her high school band. Self-taught at first, she won various competitions and later formally pursued music in college. Her passion for singing naturally expanded into musical theater.
However, the rigorous curriculum and intense group rehearsals began taking a toll on her health and voice. During a performance rehearsal, she suddenly lost consciousness. Following this incident, she faced severe health issues including high inflammation levels, fever, rashes, and most devastatingly, hormonal imbalance (testosterone dominance) that transformed her voice to sound masculine. When even ENT specialists couldn't offer solutions, she turned to vocal coach JOE as her last hope, focusing solely on voice recovery for three years.
Despite numerous obstacles, through hormone therapy and consistent vocal training, she not only regained her ability to sing and perform but also developed precise vocal control, allowing her to continue her career as a vocalist. This experience taught her that vocal training, like an athlete's basic training, may seem trivial but creates significant differences over time. She became determined to help other passionate singers avoid similar physical and mental challenges she faced. She trained under JOE to learn his effective vocal training methods that had completely transformed her, and further developed her coaching skills by participating in workshops with experienced masters like Dave Stroud and Brett Manning.

    (JOE's Comment)

Having received my vocal training for over 5 years, she brings diverse experience from studying applied music to musical theater, and currently performs as a rock band vocalist. Her greatest strength lies in this varied background. As a vocal coach, she excels at bringing out students' abilities through a calm and steady pace that anyone can follow.

  • JiHoon

Growing up with an art teacher father and pianist mother, he was naturally drawn to singing from an early age. Thanks to his mother's education, he developed perfect pitch early on. He was known among his peers for his accurate pitch, rhythm, and effortless high notes. However, when he began taking vocal lessons to participate in TV audition programs, he developed severe vocal nodules, which made it difficult to even speak, and he also experienced stage fright.
Unable to give up his passion for singing, he happened to discover JOE's lessons. As the lessons progressed, his vocal problems gradually improved, and he completely recovered from the vocal nodules that had troubled him. Once he regained the ability to sing high notes with his natural voice, he became curious about effective vocal training methods. This led him to seriously study voice science, coaching methods, and theory. He not only trained under several master vocal coaches including Dave Stroud but also completed JOE's professional vocal coach program over two years. His vocal technique is so refined that he was selected as a demonstration student for American Idol vocal coach Dave Stroud's workshop in Korea.

Having received my vocal training for 9 years, including 2 years of intensive vocal coach training, he possesses exemplary vocal technique and excellent ear training. His strength lies in his intuitive understanding of students' voices. He's particularly skilled at guiding beginners who have limited lesson experience, helping them train comfortably and safely while providing clear, detailed theoretical explanations.

  • HaeJin

Starting with piano at age 10 and expanding to saxophone, she built her musical foundation before mastering singing and dance. Her talents earned her numerous awards at school music festivals, leading to a scholarship in Applied Music. However, during her college entrance preparation, improper vocal techniques led to chronic vocal nodules occurring every other month, resulting in stage fright and growing frustration.
A turning point came when she discovered Seth Riggs' book "Singing Like the Stars," which sparked her interest in proper vocal technique. She then met JOE, who was Busan's first certified SLS vocal coach at the time. Through training with him, she gradually learned to control her voice, including mix voice technique, and regained the confidence to perform on stage.
As her skills improved through training with JOE, she developed a new dream: becoming a vocal coach who could properly help students struggling with vocal issues similar to her past experiences. Committed to studying vocal coaching, she trained not only with JOE but also took vocal training and teaching classes from Dave Stroud, Spencer Welch, and Hiroki Sakurada. She is currently a member of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) and a certified MVT (Modern Vocal Training) vocal coach.

Artistic and moving performances that resonate with humans strike a delicate balance between stability and instability - neither too predictable and stable to feel obvious, nor too unpredictable to feel chaotic. This 'delicate balance' refers to intentional 'fluctuations' that can only be created after reaching a high technical level, unlike the instability seen in beginners' techniques.
I believe the same applies to compelling vocal performances. When you can create subtle, intentional deviations based on stable vocal technique, you can become a vocalist with a creative and unique style of your own. My proposed training aims to guide you into this subtle realm between stability and instability.
